“Researching across contexts – Exploring the Why and the How”

In a day and age where we face multiple challenges characterized by high complexity and uncertainty, we need to critically assess how we as a species come to know and represent various phenomena, people, problems, etc. In this seminar, I will make the case that we need research that specializes in the art of facilitating processes that zoom out in search of ‘wholeness’. Research that complements the many academic fields that choose to zoom in and focus on one out of potentially millions of relational strands that constitute events or phenomena. Facilitating the explorative journey of perceiving phenomena across several contexts warrants plenty of questions, such as how we best explore events across contexts and how the outcomes can be useful in situations where we feel an urgency to act. These, among others, are questions that we together will explore in this seminar.

To generate meaningful discussions about transcontextual research, we will spend the first part of the seminar exploring a wildfire event from several contexts. The exercise will act as a point of departure for our later discussions about researching wicked problems. Following the mini-workshop on transcontextual understandings of wildfire, I will present why I think a science that balances out reductionist perspectives is necessary. The ’floor’ will, after that, be open to thoughts, reflections and discussions related to the value, methods and means of communicating research that does the opposite of traditional research, i.e., ‘pursuing messiness’ rather than tidying up the ‘messiness that is the world.

I look forward to seeing you and hearing your wise thoughts on this topic.
